The 75th UNHCR Executive Committee Meeting is taking place in Geneva.

Addressing the Session, Permanent Representative of Ethiopia to the UN Office at Geneva Amb. Tsegab Kebebew reiterated Ethiopia’s commitment to provide protection to people who seek international protection.

He stated that refugees in Ethiopia have been enjoying basic services, including education and health and are entitled to the right to work and freedom of movement.

Amb. Tsegab also outlined Ethiopia’s bold pledges and commitments that had been made during GRF 2023, many of which focus on enhancing self-reliance of refugees.

He underlined that climate change is posing major challenges on Ethiopia as it hosts huge number of refugees; adding that it is taking concrete measures, including plantation of millions of multi-purpose seedlings in and around refugee settlements with the aim to restore degraded lands.

However, the Amb. emphasized that the serious underfunding of Ethiopia’s refugee response plan is affecting the quality of refugee protection, where he urged donors to provide timely and adequate financial assistance to save lives and provide the necessary protection to persons of concern.

A delegation drawn from the Ethiopian Permanent Mission in Geneva and @RRSEthiopia is participating at the 75th Session of the UNHCR Executive Committee Meeting.
