Alem-Wach Refugee Site

General information:

  • Managed under the RRS Debark Liaison  office;
  • Date of establishment:  on 26 June 2021 following the attack on Mai-Ayni and Adi-Harush refugee camps (Mai-Tsebri operation) by TPLF militant group.
  • Area coverage: 0.91 km2.

The Site is situated in Amhara Regional State, Semien Gonder Zone, Dabat wereda, Chilla kebele, at a place called Alemwach. It is 800 km from Addis Ababa, 243 km from Bahir Dar (the capital of the regional state), 70 km from the historic city of Gondar, 29 km from Debark (zonal town), and 3 km from Dabat town.

As of January 2023, the camp is hosting 276 asylum seekers and 20,949 refugees (relocated from Mai-Ayni and Adi-Harush Refugee camps) all of whom are Eritreans. The number of the host community at the woreda level is 165,929 (M: 83,780; F: 82,149).

The figure at the time of the establishment was 19 (between 18-59 years old).

Facilities:

 

  • Facilities like schools, health centers, and clinics are not yet built for refugees. However, such services are available to them in local institutions in the host community surrounding the site.
