Food and Non-food Items

Distribution of Food and Non-Food Items
Ensuring access of camp residents to food and proper nutrition is one of the first priorities in our refugee camp settings, particularly during emergencies.

Many of the refugees in camps have been living in situations, in their home countries, where they have been unable to meet their basic needs for food. Many refugees and displaced families therefore arrive in camps already suffering from malnutrition.
Nutrition status of refugees in camps is often closely linked with other related services such as water, sanitation, health, shelter and protection. All these elements form aspects of food security. The underlying causes of malnutrition are often a combination of interrelated factors. Making sure, therefore, that the different partners responsible for these services fully understand the interrelation between health, food and nutrition is one of the key responsibilities of the RRS camp management team.
In a situation of forced migration of people, there is always loss of personal belongings. Refugees often flee with little more than the clothes they are wearing. Refugees are often in need of certain non-food items for their survival.
Standard items include, dignity kits( women’s hygiene items), kitchen utensils, water jerry cans, blankets and mats, among others often distributed upon arrival. In areas where malaria is prevalent, impregnated mosquito nets have been added to the list of necessary items.
The supply and distribution of these essential items, however, is often irregular and not fulfilling the demand. Hence, many households run out of these items due to old age and limited supply.
