Deputy Premier calls on the current generation to put their green legacy for posterity

Deputy Prime Minister Temesgen Tiruneh has urged the current generation to take action for a greener future by planting more trees and harness the environment to avert sporadic and unprecedented climate catastrophes and handover a greener world for posterity.

The DPM’s remark came during a special tree planting ceremony at Gulele Botanic Garden organized by Refugees and Returnees Service to officiate the launch of Ethiopia’s pledge on climate action.

The initiative aims to reverse the adverse effects of climate change by planting 100 million multi-purpose seedlings in four years’ time across refugee hosting areas in Ethiopia.

Temesgen noted: “The people and government of Ethiopia are fulfilling their promises by hosting over 1.1 million refugees. While it is a global responsibility to host and protect refugees, it is equally vital to address the challenges that arise from accommodating such large numbers.”

RRS Director General Teyiba Hassen said her institution is devoted to the government’s green legacy initiative that eyes at regaining the greenery of Ethiopia that help pursue climate resilient green economy.

Teyiba reckoned: “Ethiopia is hosting one of the largest refugee populations, adhering to the principles of responsibility and burden-sharing. This collaboration is essential to mitigate the impact on its natural resources; given the significant number of refugees the country is hosting.”

The management and staff of parent organization and of RRS, together with UN families, including UNHCR, partners, donors, the diplomatic corps and refugee representatives have planted over 2,000 tree seedlings on this special day with the pursuit to make green growth the hallmark of Ethiopia.
