RRS and UNHCR inked “Registration Multi-Year Joint strategy for refugees in Ethiopia”

(07 Oct. 2023 – Addis Ababa)

RRS and UNHCR signed Registration Multi-Year Joint Strategy for refugees in Ethiopia.

Celebrating this great accomplishment, Andrew Mbogori thanked the GoE for their continued generosity towards refugees. “This is an important milestone. Documentation is essential to protect refugees, who like the rest of us, need documents to work, open bank accounts, move freely, prove their identity and start to rebuild their lives,” he said.

The plan ensures the collection of quality, consistent and digitalized data, harmonized registration and documentation process and improved connectivity across refugee camps and sites in the country.

Ethiopia is generously hosting over 942,000 refugees, with more crossing into the country due to ongoing conflict in Sudan and the Las Anod area.

The Multi-Year Strategic Plan of Action will ensure that the GoE will have clear records of the refugees present in the country, will facilitate their access to protection while safeguarding against refoulement.

Highlighting the relevance of the deal, RRS Director General Teyiba Hassen said “this step is testimony to my government’s long-established determination to protect and serve refugees with humanity at the center.” She added: “RRS is set to develop data management guidelines per the agreement with the technical support of UNHCR to better record accounts of refugees.”

RRS Director General Teyiba Hassen and UN Refugee Agency Representative Andrew Mbogori signed the Strategic Plan of Action 2023-2026 on 06 Oct. 2023 on RRS premises, Addis Ababa.
