Refugees and Returnees Service (RRS) and partners handed over water facilities to the Somali Regional State—marking strong partnership and shared commitment to inclusive solutions to refugees and host communities under the Makatet Roadmap.
RRS, the Regional State and partners convened in Jigjiga town, where they discussed the transition of water services from NGO or humanitarian-led provision to government-led services through water utility.
Officials from Kebribeyah town and Awbare Woreda, UNHCR, UNICEF, KfW, Norwegian Refugee Council and GIZ were also in attendance to the discussion.
The parties agreed to ensure sustainability of services, continuation of finance, infrastructural development, governance and consideration of the vulnerability of refugees.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), outlining how to guide the transition, is anticipated to be signed shortly among the entities.
On the occasion, Director General Teyiba Hassen assured the parties of RRS’ commitment to support and ensure the transition and sustainability of water services for refugees and host communities.
RRS is thankful to the Somali Regional State and donors and partners, including UNHCR, UNICEF, KfW and NRC for their support in this regard.
