RRS Director General Tayiba Hassen briefed concerned parties in Geneva about the progress, emerging lessons and government priorities for advancing Ethiopia’s settlement-based approach to Sudanese refugees.
Reaffirming Ethiopia’s longstanding commitment to hosting Sudanese refugees, the DG emphasized that the government has focused not only on addressing immediate humanitarian needs but also on laying the foundations for sustainable solutions.
As part of the government’s effort, the multisectoral Makatet Roadmap has been launched to strengthen refugee inclusion and coordination across institutions, development partners and the private sector, where Sudanese refugees can benefit from it.
Despite these advances, gaps in infrastructure, access to water and energy, livelihood opportunities and private-sector engagement are challenging the refugee response, Tayiba outlined.
Hence, she called on UNHCR, development partners, international financial institutions and the private sector to align their support with Ethiopia’s priorities and translate existing commitments into tangible results for refugees and host communities.
