The 76th Executive Committee Meeting of UNHCR is underway @ the Palais des Nations, Geneva, reviewing the work of the Committee over the past year and setting its program of work for the next 12 months.
ExCom brings together governments, UNHCR leadership and key partners to deliberate on global and regional refugee situations, international protection, emerging policy challenges and the 2026 program priorities and budget.
It also features NGO consultations and side events focused on inclusion, localization and self-reliance amid a global funding crisis that continues to impact essential refugee operations worldwide — including in Ethiopia.
The Ethiopian delegation is led by Ambassador Tsegab Kebebew, Permanent Representative and includes Deputy Permanent Representative Haileselassie Subba, Refugees and Returnees Service (RRS) Director General Teyiba Hassen, Advisor to the Director General Zewdu Bedada and Second Secretary at the Permanent Mission Hana Teshome.
Ethiopia is seizing the opportunity to highlight the operational and protection impacts of declining international funding, showcase progress in national inclusion — access to services, jobs, digital identity (Fayda), irrigable land and the mixed migration and route-based approach.
It would also promote partnerships that bridge humanitarian action with development and durable solutions and advocate for equitable burden and responsibility sharing and predictable, multi-year financing.
Ethiopia remains one of Africa’s largest refugee-hosting nations, currently sheltering over 1.1 million refugees. Despite severe funding constraints, the country continues to demonstrate leadership, innovation and commitment to refugee protection and inclusion.
