Today, Refugees and Returnees Service (RRS) Director General Teyiba Hassen, together with her team, hosted Irish Minister of State at the Department of Justice, Home Affairs and Migration, Colm Brophy and held discussions on strengthening cooperation in refugee protection, resettlement and durable solutions.
During the meeting, the Director General expressed appreciation to the Government of Ireland for its continued partnership and solidarity with refugees and host communities in Ethiopia through Irish Aid, humanitarian assistance and resettlement support.
She also commended Ireland’s ongoing engagement in refugee-hosting areas, including recent field visits to Assosa, which provided an opportunity to witness the realities faced by refugees and the impact of Irish-supported programs.
The discussions highlighted Ethiopia’s continued commitment to refugee protection and durable solutions in line with the Global Compact on Refugees (GCR) and its pledges during the 2023 Global Refugee Forum.
Teyiba briefed the delegation on the MAKATET Roadmap, a government-led framework aimed at promoting refugee inclusion, while benefiting the host community through a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach.
Both sides also discussed strengthening cooperation on resettlement, complementary pathways and refugee mobility mechanisms, including Ethiopia’s ongoing efforts to transition to the Machine-Readable Convention Travel Document (MRCTD).
The Director General reaffirmed the commitment of the Government of Ethiopia and RRS to further deepen cooperation with Ireland on refugee protection and sustainable solutions for refugees and host communities.
