The new UNHCR Representative to Ethiopia Aissatou M. Ndiaye paid a courtesy visit to Refugees and Returnees Service (RRS) Head Office, marking an important step in strengthening collaborative efforts between Ethiopia and UNHCR in refugee protection and response.
The Rep. was warmly welcomed by RRS Director General Teyiba Hassen along with her Deputies.
Their meeting was opened with cordial exchanges and transitioned into substantive discussions on key issues concerning Ethiopia’s refugee operations.
Teyiba provided Ndiaye with a detailed briefing on the Government of Ethiopia’s ongoing efforts in refugee protection, including initiatives on inclusion, livelihood opportunities and durable solutions.
The DG highlighted the country’s notable progress in implementing inclusive refugee policies, while also outlining existing challenges and potential pathways for strengthening impact and sustainability.
The Representative commended Ethiopia for its inclusive policy framework, longstanding hospitality toward refugees and strong collaboration with UNHCR.
She further lauded Ethiopia’s advancements in digitization, refugee profiling and the MAKATET Roadmap – an initiative aimed at enhancing refugee inclusion in national systems and long-term planning for refugees and host communities.
Ndiaye emphasized the importance of deeper collaboration, particularly in joint fundraising, innovative solutions and improving standards in refugee camps across the country.
Their meeting concluded on a positive note with both sides expressing optimism for strengthened partnership and renewed momentum in addressing the needs of refugees and host communities.
